Stretching over a hundred miles from the southern tip of Florida, The Keys is an exciting place to fly fish, especially during tarpon season. An easy travel day from just about anywhere in the US, its laid-back attitude and world-class fishing is a combination that few destinations can match. A typical day of fly fishing during the annual tarpon migration in May, June and July can be anything but typical. Imagine posting-up in 3 or 4 feet of water off of one of the many beautiful oceanside beaches and watching as schools of big tarpon come to the boat. The most difficult part is keeping yourself composed while watching a school of 60 fish slowly swimming into your casting range. Some days a couple hundred tarpon may swim past the boat, other days it may be in the thousands. The sheer numbers of fish on the flats during the peak of the migration will impress even the most skeptical among you, but when one jumps out of the water and spits your fly back at you, it’s enough to make even a grown man cry. The Keys have been known to separate the men from the boys when it comes to giant tarpon on the fly, but there are many more thrilling options for anglers including permit, bonefish, redfish, snook, barracuda and a variety of sharks. From the Oceanside to the Gulf, up and down the Florida Keys, fly fishermen will have something fun in store to cast to at any time of the year.
