Tiamo resort

Welcome to Bahamas
Location, Type of Fishing:

Tiamo Resort is an eco-chic lodge and beachfront resort located on South Andros Island in the Bahamas. South Andros offers miles and miles of gorgeous, light-colored mudflats sprinkled with turtle grasses, providing the perfect habitat for crabs and shrimp, as well as the bonefish that feed on them. Divided from neighboring Mangrove Cay to the north by a broad creek with beautiful bonefish flats, South Andros is a remote and sparsely-populated island. Aside from a few colonized areas along the East Coast of the island, South Andros has been left largely in its natural state. On the leeward side of the island extending far to the south are the bonefish flats of the West Side National Marine Park. Venturing south in the West Side, guides can access the incredible bonefish waters around areas, like Little Creek and Grassy Creek, in search of great fishing. They can even take you as far south as the Water Cays, because the further south you go in the West Side, the less fishing pressure there is. Guests of Tiamo Resort fish the expansive flats around South Andros Island from 16’ Dolphin-style super skiffs with excellent opportunities for bonefish, as well as the occasional permit and tarpon. Collectively, the Bahamas are known as the Bonefishing Capital of the World, and South Andros has arguably some of the best bonefishing found anywhere among the many hundreds of islands and keys that constitute this beautiful archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean.

What Makes It Special:

Tiamo Resort is located right on the bonefish flats of South Bight, a large tidal creek separating South Andros from the islands of Mangrove Cay, Middle Bight and North Andros. Guests of the resort will appreciate that long runs to the good fishing grounds are now a thing of the past, as Tiamo puts you right in the middle of some truly fantastic bonefish habitat, just steps from the resort. It’s location on the South Bight allows you to fish different areas no matter the wind direction or what the tides are doing. It also allows their guests to access all of the unspoiled flats and inland tidal creeks of the West Side that lie to the southwest. Most of the fishing takes place within these protected waters, which offer a variety of habitat for bonefish, permit and triggerfish. For visiting fly fishermen, South Andros is mainly a bonefish destination, but if you’re really serious about permit and tarpon, you might be lucky to get some quality shots here, too. Although it is not considered a big tarpon destination, there are fish that can be found year-round in certain areas of the West Side. The resort does offer many non-angling activities, as well as access to a gorgeous private beach, a pool, and exquisite fine dining in the open air, weather permitting. Perfect for couples, this is a great place for the fishermen traveling with non-angling spouses, girlfriends or partners.

Fishing:

Tiamo Resort utilizes independent guides that are helpful, friendly and local, who know the bonefish flats around South Andros like no other. They can cover a wide range of waters encompassing all of Andros Island in search of good fishing, mainly fishing to southwest. Typical runs to the fishing can be as short as just a few minutes, but usually not more than a half-hour to access some of the best water in the West Side.  Where the bottom is soft, the guides will pole you around the flats in skiffs, but when the opportunity arises, you may wish to wade the hard-bottom flats and creeks inland in search of big bonefish in shallow water. While the fish in the northern creeks tend to be bigger, they can also be quite skittish, providing fly fishermen with a unique challenge. The further south you go, the schools tend to resemble the types one might imagine, where the bonefish eagerly pounce on flies well-presented in front of the fish.  Resident tarpon are found in several areas of the West Side. The same is true of permit. While they can be found on the flats at any time of year, there are certain times when you’ll find them more concentrated on the flats than others. Look for them swimming on top of rays, feeding on the crabs and shrimp that get whipped up in their wake.

How to Get There:

Andros is located 150 miles southeast of Miami and about 40 miles Southwest of Nassau. You can only get to South Andros by plane, as there is no ferry from Nassau or any other island in the Bahamas. There’s an airport on South Andros, Congo Town International (TZN), which receives flights from Nassau and Fort Lauderdale. Flying time from Fort Lauderdale is about an hour, while it is just a 15-minute hop from Nassau. If you are arriving directly from the states, you will have to collect your luggage, and then clear customs. If you’re arriving from Nassau, you will already have cleared customs there, and are free to just collect your luggage and go on your way. A member of the staff will be there to greet you when you land at Congo Town. You will be helped with your bags and transported to the boat that will take you to the resort. Not connected by any road, you can only access the resort by boat. Boat transfers to/from airport only take about 15 minutes, and are included in your stay. For a classic travel experience, arrive in style by chartering a seaplane to fly your party directly to the resort, where you’ll disembark barefoot right onto the beautiful beach in front of the resort.

Typical Day:

Just after daybreak, coffee is brewing and ready to go by 6:45 am. The kitchen starts serving breakfast as early as 7 am. If you are planning to fish that day, and want to get an early start, the guides can be at the dock by as early as 7:30 am. Hot breakfasts are made to order, and include the usual fare, like eggs any way, bacon, sausage, toast, grits, pancakes and French Toast. If you don’t see something on the menu you like, please feel free to ask for something else. For a lighter fare, choose from fresh pastries, cereals, and fruits. There is an assortment of hot tea and fresh juice. After meeting your guide, discuss your expectations for the day, then head out to the flats of the West Side. For lunch, guides usually drop anchor or beach the boat in a nice spot while you eat a packed lunch, which includes sodas and water, packed on ice. If you wish to have lunch back at the lodge, that can be arranged. In the afternoon, plan on arriving back at the lodge around 4 pm. The waitstaff will be happy to bring you an ice-cold Kalik or other refreshment, just as soon as you step off of the boat. Take a swim in the pool or a dip in the ocean. Order an appetizer off of the happy hour menu and enjoy a cold refreshment or your favorite cocktail. You may wish to arrange for a massage before dinner, which starts at 7 pm.
